Year, After Year

by Jessica Butler

Year after year I always end up with baby birds on my porch or fallen out of the trees in my yard.

I have always successfully been able to raise the babies, and set them free when the time is right. Luck may have to do with it, but time and patients over- rule.

My local vet instructed me that you can feed them a mixture of scrambled eggs and wet cat/dog food. It seems to work. Upon reading this article, I'm surprised to find out you must feed every 10 - 20 min. I feed every 2 hrs.

At the present time I have rescued a morning dove with no feet and surrendered him to a bird sanctuary.

Now I have two baby Robins I saved from some attacking black birds. There name is Ike and Spike. I tried putting them back in there nest on the ground but Ike was determined to cross the road wobbling and hopping.

I'm now on day two and all is going well. I really like this site for the information it gives, and now I must go feed them.

Birds don't eat at night
by: Anonymous

Just wanted to mention that birds never eat at night. They go to sleep just after dusk and wake up at dawn or a little after. It's not like the litter of baby bunnies I hand raised!

What I feed is soaked dog food, boiled or scrambled egg, Gerber rice baby cereal, purified water, and "Missing Link" for birds pureed in my handy chopper. Works wonderfully. Later I let them peck at sliced bananas or apples.

If the poops are runny, add Megamix to the water. Works great to lower the pH of the water and makes them feel good.

BTW, canned dog food or cat food will work, but they STINK in the poops. Your whole house will smell. Stick with dry dog food that has been soaked, trust me.

our own baby bird
by: Anonymous

Today my parents found a fledgling baby bird in their yard. My middle daughter and I wanted to put it in a box and somehow affix it to the tree where the frantic parents were circling.

However, my overly nervous mother had a fit, and said my daughter would fall from the tree or the bird would. Anyway, long story short, we ended up taking him home and making baby bird formula from an on-line recipe.

By the time we read this article and discovered we should have put him back, too much time had past and the parents had gone. Also, it is going to be a very cold night.

I was relieved to see that he could be fed every two hours instead of every 15-20 minutes, but I'm not sure how we're even going to manage that through the night. I think it is amazing that you have managed to do this several times--I have never been successful.

I could really use a little more information in order to have my own success story.
