Wrens On Myy Porch

The Tall Gourd Is The House

The Tall Gourd Is The House

I grew birdhouse gourds last summer an have been very lax about completing my projects. Some are already painted, some only cleaned out, some still hanging to dry.

We are storing a fish tank on our back porch and it has become my "drop spot". I left a gourd that I had cleaned out sitting on top of the fish tank.

The other day I figured I would get off my duff and finish them, so I picked up the one on the tank... Hmmm, it's got leaves and stuff in it.

Must be from the winter... I cleaned some of it out, and then the next day I see a wren flying into it.... It is one foot from my back door!

I watched the wrens carry stuff in so I propped it up better with rocks.

Yesterday I thought I would take a peek to see if anything was going on..... Four eggs!!!!! I am flabbergasted that they would nest so close to us....

I will be monitoring them for the day they fledge.... I will be sitting in my back yard standing guard against the snakes we have....Not my babies!

We Have Babies!
by: Ellen

Yesterday mama and dad were flying back and forth with worms, so I checked the nest last evening and we have little red, bald babies! They could barely hold their heads up....

Eggs
by: Anonymous

Tues 7-1-08 We have been quietly going in and out of the back door so as not to disturb the wrens.. She is so quiet I thought she had flown away. But my neighbor came over to see the eggs and she gently tapped on the gourd.... Out popped Mrs. Wren ! I am happy she feels comfortable enough to stay while we go in and out.

Snakes
by: Ellen

Betty, I am in western North Carolina, we have a lot of never-cut woods around us. We have black, brown, rat and (we think we saw one) rattlers (ick). We have seen 6 total this year so far, which is a lot.
