Wrens in Hanging Plant

by Donna Cooley
(Cincinnati, OH)

We have a spider plant on our back deck hanging under the eave. It's going to get mighty chilly tonight in Cincinnati, so my husband just brought the plant inside.

Out popped a pair of Carolina wrens (much to the delight of the cat)! We were able to direct them out of the house after a few minutes, and we hung the plant back up outside.

We really want to bring this plant in for the winter, though. Any thoughts on what to do about the nest? I'm hoping there aren't any eggs at this point (mid-October). Thoughts, please! Thanks!

Wow! I guess you guys were surprised! and I bet the cats thought they were in heaven!

Spider plants are so tough. They can endure really cold weather. I had one buried in an unsuspected snow that was huge, and beautiful. of course the frost killed what was on the outside.

When the warmer weather came back, I just trimmed it all down and started watering it again and low and behold its the same gorgeous plant this year.

But they do look nice inside. I'm sort of thinking they may have just been using it for shelter? Not sure its breeding season. Could you hang something in its place?

I'm not sure this helps. But it was a really cute story. I love our high desert Cactus Wrens, even if they are a nuisance!
Good Luck!
Cindy
