Wrens In Bar-B-Que

by Marion DeCaro
(Cobble Hill B.C. Canada)

From my kitchen window I can see my back deck and a few weeks ago I watched a bird bringing what I thought looked like pretty big sticks into a hole in my old bar-b-que.

I had a look under the cover and it seemed like a very messy attempt at a nest. A few days later my daughter and I checked again and it had turned into a very tidy and cozy looking nest at the top of a pile of sticks.

A few days later and we noticed eggs and then for days I watched the male bringing bugs to the female as she sat on the eggs.

She would stick her head out the hole in the bar-b-que and he'd feed her.

A few days later my daughter was visiting again and she looked under and discovered there were 5 or 6 babies.

They appeared to have just hatched, no feathers at all and very tiny. Now the female (I think it's just her) feeds non stop.

I watch her fly away and she's back in seconds with something and gone again.

It's like watching a nature program right from my kitchen!

I haven't checked to see the babies lately, I am hestitant to lift the cover many times but they must be getting pretty big and almost ready to leave the nest.

I'm happy to hear they may raise another brood there so I can watch again!
