Wren nesting in nest brought home from Mauritisu

by Christine Allen
(London UK)

Whilst holidaying in Mauritius in Nov 08 we experienced hundreds of weaver bird nests hanging from trees, it was delightful to see the activity.

When walking through the grounds I found an empty nest and decided to take it home, I soaked it in the bath to get rid of insects and put it in a plastic bag. When we got home I poked it into a bush close to the house climbing up a fencing panel.

Last week I saw a wren enter and was delighted to think we may be in with a chance. One week later the nest is in good shape, he used the wall basket coconut matting to start with and it now seems to be a perfect circle of leaves and the entrance is now really small in comparison.

We thought we had lost him after much work in the garden but yesterday he was back with further material, we are hoping his mate chooses our location to nest in. Amazing when you think how far the nest has come and that we have had a wren box for years without any interest.

Fingers crossed for a brood:-)

Quick update, I sprinkled mealyworms around the floor and within a minute he appeared from nowhere and began savoring, he also took some in the nest so I guess if he ever entices her in he'll let her know its a luxury penthouse with upmarket take away, fingers crossed she's suitably impressed.
