Wren Nesting In Ivy

by Rebecca King
(Hueytown, Ala.)

In the past few years I have noticed wrens hanging around my central Alabama home and encouraged their presence by putting out crushed peanuts for them which they love.

Knowing that they love to nest in protected spots from the weather,I often wondered if they would one day pick my ivy plant on my side porch for a nice hidden spot.

One day as I was leaving for an errand to run,I noticed a wren fly from the plant. Looking around the back side of the plant I saw a nest laying on its side with a tunnel of a hole. I was thrilled.

A few days later I looked at the nest again and could tell there were eggs in the nest and have since kept check every few days for the hatching.
On mothers day as I was coming in the house I barely heard the babies chirping and knew they had arrived. Looking in the nest I could see three but there may be more because the nest is hard to see inside.
Now I watch as these parents carry bugs back and forth and I hope I am around the day they choose to leave the nest.
