Wren Nesting in Basket

by Ann Butterfield
(Wilmington, VT)

I had brought an old used robins' nest into the house several years ago. It sat in a basket and was an interesting conversation starter and fun for the grandchildren to see when visiting Gramma.

Well this spring I removed it and hung it outside the kitchen door in the attached garage. I then began to see, as summer approached ,the wrens flying around and looking for nesting spots.

Imagine my surprise when I discovered last Thursday, July 16th that they had indeed taken over the old used nest!!! Today we "mirrored" it and sure enough, there inside are 4 white eggs...don't see the brown markings, but neither do we want to disturb Mamma Bird!!!

I have been watching birds now over 50 years and I'm still seeing new things and am so excited each time I come across something new and different.

Thanks for letting me share and if I can get pictures, I will certainly send them along!

Birds recycle?
by: Bonnie

I enjoyed your wren story. Wrens recycle! Who knew? Ha ha.

I'm in eastern Arkansas, near Memphis, and we got our first wrens nesting under our carport this year. When I found out they're not migratory and will freeze and/or starve in winter without help, I promptly bought a convertible nest/winter roost. Need to find an easy recipe for suet so I can make my own. I'm a hooked wren fan!
