Wren in Wreath

by Jenny
(Houston)

My husband and I noticed a couple of weeks ago a nest being built in a wreath on our front door. At first we thought it couldn't be. So, close to the house and in a place that has a lot of traffic.

Sure enough, as time progressed a nest began to form and then the eggs came. My children were so excited to have a bird build a nest on their front door.

Everyday our little lady would meet us at the door. We would all walk to the front door and start looking for her. Sure enough she would be sitting on her precious eggs.

My daughter would say, "She is home mom." I would put the key in the door and give it a little shake while talking to her. The rest of the crew would prepare and lean to one side of the door.

Our little feathered friend would poke her head out, hop to the front of her nest, then fly to the ground and hop off.

The kids knew not to touch her nest but, everyone always wanted to know if we had babies yet. I would carefully check and give the kids the observation for that day. Mother was always close by and sometimes let us know we were pushing it.

There were also the times that friends came over and thought we had put a fake nest with a bird in the wreath. They learned very quickly when they got to close that this was in fact the real deal.

We also had the pizza delivery person think that our pet bird flew out of the house because my husband opened the door to quickly and out she flew.

Twice mama bird got into the house when the door was opened to quickly. Both times my husband was able to get her out safely. A couple of days ago the big day finally came.

Five little fuzzy heads were seen in the nest. Now when we arrive home from a day of school and activities the question is, mom how are our babies.

They are too precious. Their little fuzzy heads and bright yellow beaks always begging for food. Needless to say this bird and her babies have brought this family much joy.

We have thoroughly enjoyed taking part in this beautiful process. It is definitely something my children, husband and myself will never forget.

I can only hope that mama bird will choose us again in starting a family. I have some great pictures and will try to get them up. Thanks for letting me share.
