Wren in Wreath

by Ellie
(Southbury, CT)

A few weeks ago I walked past the grape vine wreath covered with silk hydrangeas I hung next to our front door and noticed things weren't the same as usual.

There seemed to be extra ornaments in the middle, with a tunnel-like entrance to a deep nest.

I noticed that whatever bird built this nest helped itself to the artificial leaves, etc. that adorned the wreath.

When I used my finger to point out the nest to my husband a tiny bird flew right past me. I didn't know at the time what type of bird it was until I heard the unusual sound it made and followed it to the source.

I soon heard some peeping but didn't see any little ones until days later. Now I can see three little heads near the entrance if I am very quiet and slow.

What perplexes me is that we have been going through a kitchen renovation and there have been contractors coming in and out past that wreath constantly and they have been using their chop saws, etc. not more than 6 feets away.

I am hoping I get to see the babies leave the nest. Finally, I'm a grandmother!

So sad
by: Anonymous

We had a wren's nest on our front door in a wreath. We tried so hard to protect it and not use that entrance. A couple of evenings ago we woke to find the nest with 2 babies had been destroyed. we are pretty sure it was a raccoon since we have problems with them in our yard. i just hope the mom was able to get away.

Wren Nest

I believe at the end of the season the nest should be dismantled and cleaned for the next season, but yours is a different case. I would leave it to be sure the babies don't come back to live.

Sad ending
by: Ellie

The morning after posting my story about our family of wrens nesting in our wreath my husband went out to retrieve the newspapers and found one of the baby wrens dead on the ground. It looked like it might have been attacked either before or after its death. I buried it in our garden and feel so sad, almost like I had failed to keep it safe. It looks like the nest is empty now so I hope the other babies got out OK and are now safe and secure in the trees. I don't know where they usually live after leaving the nest. Do they stay in the area or fly somewhere else? Should I dismantle the old nest or leave it for next time?
