Babies Getting Fed

We live in eastern NC. in a rural area & watched as the adult wrens built nest in box, and then as food was brought to the babies.

My husband and I sat on the deck and watched the adults bring food, though they were cautious, they still didn't seem to mind us being there.

One thing I'd like info about is I've noticed the past few days as food was given, something was given back to the adult bird. Anyone have any info on this?

This morning, we watched two baby wrens fledging from box. What a joy to watch for several hours and they eventually hopped, half flew toward the grape vine down back.

I have pictures of babies being fed, and baby sticking head out of nest last evening.

Admin. Adds:

What you saw being taken away is called a fecal sac. Each time the baby wren is fed it creates waste which is encased. The parent bird disposes of it away from the nest so predators don't find the nest and to keep the nest clean.

Think of it as a diaper.

What a wonderful explanation of how the Mother Bird takes care of the "poop". I had never heard that before although when I reached into my Mourning Dove nest in between sitting, I found no fecal material although there was a perfectly round circle on the tile below the nest which happened in only a couple of days. They, as they became a little bit older, put their little butts over the edge of my hanging light fixture and did not spoil their nest. Fascinatin. Thank you for the insight.
