Will She Return

by Pamela Tanton
(Baltimore, Maryland)

Yesterday morning (6th June), I noticed that a robin had started building a nest right on top of my balcony railing. It's wedged between the wall and a pot of mint. I couldn't believe she would build in an area where I'm constantly going in and out.

I figured I would let her know from the start that she'd be near me--I ate my meals inside, but only about six feet away from the nest. She did notice me, I'm certain, but it didn't seem to bother her.

This morning, she continued building, but I haven't seen her since about noon. The nest looks pretty finished to me, except there are a few stray twigs sitting in the bottom of it.

Is it possible that she didn't realize when she started that there are people here? We've been pretty quiet, but we do go in and out.

No children, just two adults and a small dog. I have lots of plants out there, and I have to take care of them.

I just read your post. What happened? Did the robin come back? I'm curious.

She Did Return
by: Anonymous

I wrote my post a year ago. My robin did return. She left the nest alone for about a day and a half, and then came back and laid one egg per day for four days. The eggs all hatched, and the baby birds flew off right on schedule. I can't remember the exact time frame now, although I have it written in a notebook. I was relieved that everything that I saw was positive. I had been worried about the vulnerability of the babies, but they hopped off the balcony and never looked back, and I never looked down for them. Figured I had done what I could to keep them safe, and it was time to let nature take its course. This spring, when I hear robins calling, I often wonder whether any of them are the babies that were born on my balcony.

Will She Return
by: mderochie@msn.com

I too have this same problem. My robin came back for the second year, she was very busy building her nest on the down spout where it comes down from the roof and down the patio support pole. She did this one afternoon and the next morning until noon, now she has disappeared. I have one small dog and a blind cat so they don't bother her. I live in CO and we are having a bit of a cold spell. I am wondering - will she come back to this next or will it be safe for me to tear it down. She built a beautiful nest, too bad to let is waste.
