Waiting for the little heads to pop up!

Looking at me looking at you!

Looking at me looking at you!

Morning doves have lived in my yard for a few years. I see them near the birdbath amd feeder every day. Usually two sit together on the fence or on the telephone lines. Recently two were walking on my lanai screened roof. Very unusual and then I spotted a nest.

I have been waiting for 2 weeks to see babies. It does not appear that the male is on the nest because he was bigger. But I guess I can be fooled. Maybe he comes in the evening but I thought Mom was on day duty because she is smaller.

The nest is on top of the metal frame which has bushes up against it. I can see everything. Mom turns around frequently to watch me. I see her tail hanging over if she is turned around or maybe that's when dad is home.

Here is a picture I took this morning.

What a wonderful experience this is to watch.

Where are the babies?
by: Pat

It's been 3 weeks and the mother has moved off the nest. She comes and goes. Staying near by.

I do not see any baby birds. It appears she has pushed the nest down farther into the bushes and she checks in but does not sit there. She stays
on the metal part of the lanai and is cooing very often.

Where are the babies?

Snakes and Birds
by: Administrator

Yes, snakes especially rat snakes will climb shrubs, trees, and metal poles to get at birds and eggs. Bird netting, sometimes also sold as deer netting can be layered around poles, trees, etc. to trap snakes where they can then be cut loose and released somewhere else.

Otherwise the snakes will get the birds and or eggs.

Question about Snakes
by: Pat

I am noticing a black snake slithering around near the nest. Can they climb up the lanai and bushes and attack the bird and the eggs?

What am I to do now?
