Giving comfort after a hard time

Giving comfort after a hard time

I buried my mother yesterday. She and My dad mated for life, and she loved him so much and grieved so for him when he died.

I have been taking care of her for 4 years after she'd been diagnosed with a terminal illness.

This morning, I woke up to the most soothing sound of doves cooing. I don't generally hear them in this busy neighborhood.

Went into the living room and saw two doves, sitting on a brick ledge just outside the window area (screen is off because we have hung a bird feeder there and need access to it.)

I laid on my sofa and watched them all day, bringing twigs to the corner. Their coos were so comforting. They suddenly left at 3:30 p.m.

I can't help but think it's my mom and dad, here to tell me they are winging free, together, and to give me some peace.

I hope they come back tomorrow.

Return...
by: Anonymous

Almost to the day, one year later now, my husband and I came home from a trip and the doves were back in the same spot, working up a nest and cooing away! We were so delighted! Then the next day, at the apt. next to us, the owners began to put up scaffolding to fix windows, lots of noise and clatter. The doves tried to check out real estate in our front window but there is not a good ledge there. They finally left. Maybe next year!

thank you
by: carrie

Thank you for sharing your story Mary. I wish you all the luck and happiness in the world. I was wondering... at about 6:00pm a pair of mourning doves showed up in our yard in the trees. They sat and talked back and forth for some time. I have never heard them before today. What a beautiful sound it was. They are not known to be in our area at all. I hope I can think of them as a good omen of good things to come.

Gone baby baone
by: Mary

Well, we went on vacation and came back and I was broken-hearted to find that the nest was still in the window, and the egg was still in there, but waited 3 days and no sign of a bird on it. Finally checked it out and there is a hole in the egg, what was in it had dried up. I don't know what happened in our absence. I can't believe how incredibly sad I was! They gave me such comfort.

Your Wonderful Story
by: Rich

Hello Mary,
I'm sorry to hear of your loss. Your story was beautiful and I couldn't help but tear up while reading it. We too recently have been able to witness a family of Mourning Doves on our front porch and they have been a wonderful addition to our family.

I wish you all the best moving forward.

Rich

Egg!
by: Mary

Last night I witnessed the changing of the guard. About 6:30 p.m., mom came to relieve dad. (We women always get the hard shift with the kids!) As they jockeyed their switch, I saw one egg. I was so excited. I know it may seem over-thought to some, but I believe that after 4 years of caring for my mom, this pair of doves are here to say "Make something, create something, hatch a new plan for yourself."
That's my story and Im stickin' to it.

Re: The Visitation
by: Mary

Well the doves are here to stay, I had to leave for a week but returned and they have indeed made a nest and love to peer into the windows at us and are not at all bothered by household activity. They have even stayed despite a pesky squirrel that showed up one day. It has given me great comfort- how thoughtful nature is, and intuitive as well, for I feel they really are here to soothe.

They will be back!
by: lori

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. But, what a wonderful gift from nature to comfort you at this time. I trust the pair will be back. It is amazing to see where these doves will create nests and how sparse they can actually be. Enjoy and send pics of the babies!
