Uno... our $1,000.00 dove

by Colleen Taber
(Cooper City, Florida, USA)

About three years ago, my husband found a dove laying on our pool deck with its right wing barely connected to its body. He brought the bird in to ask my help.

My suggestion was to take it to a natural habitat and see if they could do something for it. They then suggested another location for us to take "our" bird.

My husband dutifully took the dove to the suggested place. Upon arriving, they asked for his contact information and any additional info he could give them about "our" bird.

About five days later, he recieved a call to come and get "our" bird. When my husband arrived, he was presented with a bill for over $987.00 for the surgery on "our" bird.

My husband was in shock - but is an animal lover like me and handed over the credit card. Today "Uno" (named because he only has one wing) really is OUR bird. We have atrium in our home that goes from the roof to the floor, has live plants, water and a pet for Uno. We found a turtle walking in the street and put it in the atrium. On sunny days we will find Uno standing on the turtle's back while the turtle is walking around.

That isn't the end.... Just a few weeks ago, we had tropical storm Hannah disrupt South Florida. Again, we found another dove and "Dos" is now living in the atrium with Uno and his pet turtle

Love those doves
by: Colleen

I can understand completely. We have the two doves in our atrium and three feeders outside for them.

About a month ago, one flew into our glass door. I was concerned about it and brought it into the atrium as I didn't want it to be defenseless. A day later, it was flying around the atrium.

We had to open the sliding doors to the atrium and then all the doors in the house so that it could fly away safely. It was a bit chaotic - but better for our temporary tenant.

We hava a Dove Too
by: Herman

Last week a hawk killed and ate one of a pair of doves that was living in our yard. I grew attached to the two, watching them in the morning at our feeder. The lone dove still comes around, I hope it finds a new mate soon.

Thanks for sharing your story.

proud parents of uno
by: Anonymous

I am honored to know the Taber family and am truly happy that Uno has a friend of his own species. What a loving thing to do, it just goes to show how beautiful the world can be if only we try and love all living things equally.
