The Second Bluebird I Have Ever Seen

by Mary

Mountain Bluebird - Nevada State Bird

Mountain Bluebird - Nevada State Bird

I cannot be described as a bird watcher. I enjoy seeing birds, but have never been avidly involved in bird watching, as I know so many people are.

Nonetheless, I always feel a bit of a thrill when I see a bird that is different than the mourning doves, sparrows, blackbirds, quail, hawks, robins, pigeons, finches, Canadian geese, etc., that are common to our area. Incidentally, I live in Reno, Nevada, which is considered high desert.

This morning while pulling out of my garage I looked to the left towards my very small front yard and there was a simply beautiful bluebird, probing for a worm in the grass.

After achieving his treat he flew up to the small leafless flowering crabapple close by and surveyed his surroundings. I had a medical appointment and could not spare the time to monitor his further activities.

Seeing Mr. Bluebird was a very cheerful moment for me, as the medical appointment involved a test which may have serious impact on my future.

At that moment I recalled the saying "the bluebird of happiness" and everything seemed very good in my world.

My only other experience in seeing a bluebird was more than 25 years ago while temorarily living in Sacramento.

I was seated in my town house breakfast nook next to a bay window and saw my very first bluebird perched on a fence about 8 feet from the window.

I will always remember that moment, and seeing my second bluebird today was really a precious event.

That's all I have to say.
