Male Bluebird On House

Male Bluebird On House

I had bluebirds living in my bluebird house. I was so happy!! This morning I discovered the side door open and part of the nest on the ground.

I don't think there were eggs yet...I had been checking. But the female has not been seen and the male came twice and looked into the hole but would not enter.

What do I do? Do I remove the old nest? Move the box? How can I get them back?? Please help!

They will come back

If your side door was open, then you definitely did not have it shut securely enough. I use a screw so you have to use a screwdriver to open the door (this is most important to solve your problem). also, in your picture it also looks like a wooden post. ideal is to use a thin (preferably 1-inch) metal pole so it is difficult/impossible for predators to climb it. i don't know how far from the trees in the background the birdhouse is, but it is best to keep it at least 6 feet away from anything that a predator good jump from (fence, tree, etc.). finally, make sure the box is at least 5-6 feet off the ground too so it's hard for cats to jump onto it. the bluebirds are well aware of the house now. they just need to feel comfortable again and they will return to nest again soon!
