Roosting Box

by Bill
(Plymouth, MI)

After building this roosting box I installed it in my backyard last November. It stands about 6ft at the entry hole. There has been NO activity in this roosting box. What might be the problem?

Roosting Experiences

Thanks for the comment. I plan to raise this box up to about 10 feet. During the summer months I plan to cover the entry way at the bottom and cut an entry at the top. The thought of the entry at the bottom during these cold Michigan months is to keep any heat generated by all those little many little guys looking for cover.

I've been successful attracting House Wrens on my deck in a small bird house that sits within 6' of where we have our table and chairs. As long as we don't get too close, they are cautiously comfortable.

It is just wonderful to watch how busy they are once their eggs are hatched. The first year we had them it was such an experience watching the little ones being almost pushed out to take their first flight, never to return...sob, sob, sob.

Great looking roost. I made one a month ago - nobody home yet and it got down to 2 degrees. I did notice in my instructions it stated it should be 10-12 ft above the ground.

I couldn't figure out how to get it up that high - so for this year I have it on top of the gazebo I made. So it is up about 8 feet facing south.

Birds - give us a break and use our roosts
