Robin Nest on beam under deck

by Carla
(Solon Iowa USA)

This year we noticed a Robin's nest on a support beam underneath our deck. My husband found it when he was putting in a retaining wall. Although my husband was working not very far from the nest, this did not deter them from feeding and raising their young.

Since the nest was built beneath the floor of the deck I was able to watch the Robin's nest through the space between the flooring. There were three in total so the nest was pretty full once they started getting some size to them.

About two and half weeks ago they finally left the nest. I came home one evening and my husband said one of them was sitting on the edge of the nest. The very next evening I went out to check on them and they were all gone. Since we live in an area that is surrounded by timber, I am hopeful they made their way to the trees

Just this evening I walked out on to our deck and decided to peak through the boards to see if it was still empty. I was quite surprised to see another Robin's egg in the nest. After finding a new egg in the nest I decided to check the web to see how many broods Robins might raise in a year. According to what I read it seems they can have up to three in a year so I am making the assumption that maybe the same Robins are using the nest. We will see if more eggs appear in the next few days.
