Robin Coach Light Nest

by Sheri Saccocio
(Rotterdam, New York USA)

This is the second Spring that a robin has made a nest on the coach light next to our back door. Last year, three fledglings hatched. This year we have four!

The nest was built on a light that is only about 8 inches wide and sits within about 9 inches from the opening of our back door.

Each time we open our door, it makes a high-pitched squeeking sound - the fledglings think it's their mother back with worms because all four of them stretch up their necks in expectation each time the door is opened!

The fledglings sleep a bit during the day - with their fragile heads hung over the edge of the nest.

We can see their tiny eyes closed and their heads bobbing up and down with each breath. They are so sweet and vulnerable - they have really stolen our hearts!

We are so impressed with the parent robins. They work all day long, taking turns to bring worms to the hungry beaks in the nest. How tirelessly they work!

According to the information on the web page, the fledglings will only be with us for about one more week and then they will fly away to start their lives.

It will be both a sad day and a happy one - that all four made it.

We will be watching our yard to see if we can spot any of "our" little robins as Spring turns to summer.
