Raided by Racoons

by Sarah Poplick
(Dade City, FL, USA)

My 12 year old daughter came running into the house, she held out her hands to reveal three very young nestlings.

She knows to leave young birds alone, so I scolded her. "but Mama!" she replied, " Two raccoons were going to eat them!" She explained that she rescued three of four babies and that she had searched for the nest but could not find one.

She searched the internet to learn the type of bird and how to care for them. She has been very diligent in caring for them.

They have been growing and thriving over the last four days, so this morning she was heart broken when we found the smallest one had fell out of the nest she had made for them.

I tried to console her as she held the cold lifeless little bird in her hand. She made them a larger nest and has worked to keep them warm.

We think they are Sparrows but are not 100% sure. Wish I had pictures to show but I don't have the technology for that.

We will make updates as this story has not ended yet!
