Patio Cover Baby Birds

I live in Las Vegas - it is very hot here - Sadly my story is not a happy one. Saturday afternoon I heard chirping on my patio.

I looked out the back door, and about 6 feet away in the patio cover, I could see three baby sparrows peeking their little heads over my aluminum patio cover.

Apparently the mother sparrow decided the underhang of my patio was good place to lay her eggs. I suppose it would have been a good place if it wasn't 108 degrees yesterday.

I could see that they had their mouths open and they just looked hot but I didn't know what I should do.

The mother spent Saturday night on the nest with them but when I came home from errands on Sunday and they were all dead. I felt so bad. I was afraid if I bothered them the mother would abandon them.

Anyway I had to have a friend come over and take them out and clean out the area so she wouldn't nest there again. I hope she doesn't.

I felt I needed to tell someone, birds here in Las Vegas have it tougher than most dealing with the heat.

Bush baby advice
by: Anonymous

I'm no expert, but I kinda think that as long as they are in a bush, and not in an area that gets burning hot (like a metal patio cover) they will probably be ok. They should get enough moisture from what their mother provides to keep them hydrated. Very kind thought though - if only everyone cared about nature and animals the world would be a much nicer place. :)

Would creating shade be harmful?
by: Anonymous

I have a similar situation RIGHT NOW, though it's not quite as bad. I'm in the DC area, and there's a nest in a small bush in the middle of an open and hot yard. Today will be the hottest day in DC, over 100 in the sun. So I am wondering whether putting a patio umbrella over the bush would be okay, or would the parents abandon the nest? They seem pretty skittish already. Maybe it's not really too hot for them as is.

thanks
by: Georgia

Thank you both for your kind words. I thought about misting the babies with a spray bottle but they were in an overhang, underneath the patio cover, and I thought it would make it hotter. It is indeed brutal here in summer. It'll be 115F in the next few weeks. Q: Do sparrows mate and have broods all year? Any info. would be appreciated.. Thanks again

Hard to find shade
by: Bonnie

I'm sorry the mother sparrow chose a poor place for her nest. Doubtless it's hard to find shade in Las Vegas. If you could have taken an empty aerosol container, put water in it, and sprayed the baby birds now and then, it might have helped. Either that or try to rig up an umbrella over the spot where the nest was.

Administrator Says:
Never mist baby birds. Cooling a featherless bird this way could cause harm. Better to let nature take its course than cause harm yourself.

Truly a sad story. So sorry you had to witness such a horrible thing.
Hopefully you will be able to witness a happy story soon, with a new nest in a better place.
