Our Winter Chicks In Our Kitchen

by Ann
(Westmeath, Ireland)

Baby birds not in our yard but in our kitchen and not only that they were hatched out on the 26th of November. Is this not unusual.

A starling started nest building in the pipe of our extractor fan about three weeks ago and we thought nothing further of it. The vent cover on the outside of the house had fallen off sometime ago and this location was used last spring for nesting purposes. Obviously a nice, warm cozy place to build a home.

Today we entered the kitchen to much activity and noise. It was obviously feeding time for all in our kitchen. Regularly throughout the day you can hear the flurry of activity followed by the peace and quite of full tummies and sleepy heads.

I have gone outside and observed the bird entering and leaving the house and have left some bird food for them. Is this unusual to have birds hatched at this time of the year and what is there chance of survival giving the short days and lack of feeding hours?
