Our New Friends

by The Ruzylo Family

We recently had the pleasure of a pair of Morning Doves build their nest right on the framing shelve on our front porch.

They have been wonderful to watch and listen to. There have been two hatchlings which the family has named Darla and Vincent.

We have been respectful of their space and feel that we really have earned their trust, always being careful not to be too loud and not to get too close either.

The babies have begun to see what’s going on around their world and we now know that it will probably be about one more week before they move on.

In any event, we feel blessed to have had all of them as guest at our home.

No pictures, we didn't want to frighten the babies!

Hopefully by now you've figured out what's going on. Unless you witnessed the day they were born, those babies are older than you think.

Mom and Dad will stay away for long intervals hoping the kids will get the urge to fly. Don't worry, the parents are close by (in a tree nearby or on a telephone wire, etc)!

After a few days of this (a parent comes back each time usually by late evening), the babies will leave the nest.

They may fly down very close to their nest or they may fly further out to a garden where they can blend in with the ground.

I've had them fly to our brown wicker patio chairs. By the end of the day they'll disappear to a safer place for the night.

Look around, for the next few days they stay nearby with Mom and Dad.

Need urgent help
by: Carmen Rosas

Hi bird lovers,

I live in Mexico City, in an area now full of buildings and concrete. The trees near my home were cut off to build a mall.

Lots and lots of birds came to the huge and beautiful tree in front of my little house.

Now the neighbors feel it throws to many leaves and do not want to sweep any more so they are asking authorities to cut it.

IS THERE ANY WAY TO BUILD SOME KIND OF SHELTER FOR THEM IN MY FLAT ROOF? DO YOU THINK THEY WILL USE IT AFTER THE TREE IS CUT OFF? WHICH IS THE CHEAPEST MATERIAL? I THINK THERE ARE ABOUT 200 BIRDS.

Our nest is a bit more robust, if you will; although it is loosley constructed. We have open framing on the underside of our porch. The nest sets on a 4 X 10 beam that runs the length of the porch, and the roof protects it from the elements. The birds have left now, but I have read that you shouldn't destroy the nest if you would like them to return because the parents can produce a second set of eggs. (Not exactly sure if this will happen, but the nest poses no problem for us, so we are going to leave it for a while). As mom and dad came and went, some pieces of the nest did fall to the ground but I haven't grabbed the ladder to inspect the nest with the hope that if we leave it alone they will be more inclined to return. We hope they do! Funny thing about our dog while the birds were here, he seemed to have a heighten sense of protection for the house than usual! Don't know why this might have happened. He was not aggresive to the birds at all.

mourning doves
by: judith

We had a mourning dove nest outside our sitting room window. The nest was at eye level, perfect for watching!

I wonder if your nest is like ours. The nest was built so flimsy that near to time for the babies to fledge, there was no nest to speak of! The babies were mostly balanced on the tree limb.

We wonder if it is purposefully constructed in such a manner to encourage the babies to leave home.

What's your nest like?
