Our First Bluebirds

by Gregg B.
(Brooksville, Fl.)

We also have our first bluebird pair who have recently chosen our son's homemade birdhouse for a nesting site. We are overjoyed with their arrival and decision to make a home in his birdhouse.

After they decided to choose the birdhouse for home, the territory from other birds began. Squirrels are not exempt from their wrath either. One got chased up and down the tree for approximately 10 minutes until the squirrel left in exhaustion.

Earlier in the day the pair began pecking and banging on our windows in self defense. Since our windows are tinted with a reflective coating, we could understand why they were doing this since it was in self defense of their reflection.

I set up a light mist from our lawn sprinkler to spray on the windows to discourage their activity and it seems to work. After getting wet once or twice they gave up the battle and went back to work building the nest.

Our neighborhood cats really don't seem bothered or interested in them because of their protective behavior. We have attempted to observe other birds that frequent our yard and others don't seem interested or upset by the bluebirds arrival.

We love listening to their beautiful songs are looking forward to seeing babies soon, and hopefully more bluebirds in the future.
