Our First Bluebirds

by Phil K.
(Macungie, PA)

April 21, 2008: My mom and dad gave my wife a Bluebird house last Christmas. Last week I bought a pole and put the house up in our side garden.

We were afraid we were too late getting it out. I would check the house daily for signs of new inhabitants, but to no avail.

We went away last Friday for a weekend trip. When we got home Sunday, we went to check the house together and, much to our surprise, we have a nest!

As we watched from a distance, we saw Mr. and Mrs. hard at work. She was bringing in more nesting material and he was sitting in a nearby tree. Occasionally, he would pop into the house, I presume to inspect her work.

We are so excited! This is our first time with a Bluebird house, and we can't wait! we are like a couple of expectant grandparents!

I plan to take plenty of pictures, and will share them here when I can.

After seeing mother bluebird on the nest for several days without moving, we checked her closely today and found that she had died on the nest. We buried her beneath the rose bushes near the nesting box.

Not sure what will happen now, as there aren't that many bluebirds around to mate with our male.

Not sure why she died. Don't know if he will stick around now.

Enjoy the Blues
by: Anonymous

Our first year setting up a bluebird nestbox was in March, 2007. We enjoyed every minute of it and I kept a journal of everything I saw....from the male/female choosing the box, to him supervising her on the building of the nest to the first egg laid and the day I checked the box to see that all the babies had fledged. Keep a journal and you will have wonderful memories for years to come!!

Bluebird Update
by: Phil K

April 25, 2008: We have our first egg today! It is light blue. I am a little hesitatnt to keep opening the box to check, as I don't want to disturb mom and dad bluebird. I plan to keep watch from a distance. Still no worthy pictures, but I'll keep trying.
