Nesting in the Chimenea

The Potter's House

My Wife and I moved into an apartment while we are having a new home built, we have had bird feeders before, but are not avid birders.

We have a small chimenea on a 4 foot stand on our patio, several weeks ago I noticed that it had been filled with straw, but never saw signs of the bird.

Last week my wife was sitting out and received a strong lecture from the resident wren, who perched on the rail.

The last couple of days, we have seen 2 wrens feeding, and looking very perplexed at us, but I still was uncertain if the nest was being used.

Tonight, When I noticed a piece of the straw was poking out, I reached to remove it and was met face to face with a wren, flying like a bat out of hell from the mouth of the chimenea.

Hopefully, our frightening close encounter will not cause them to move. Maybe the poor real estate market will force them to stay around. If so I will keep you posted

Your wrens are probably OK
by: Anonymous

No worries, I scared our Mama Wren twice before I learned to leave that box on the carport alone! She hung in there and did just fine. I hope you know to plan now to feed and shelter your wrens in winter.

I just found out that they are non-migratory so when winter comes and no insects are available, they will starve or freeze to death.

I bought a thick pine box that converts from a nest box to a winter roost. Several wrens can perch inside and mingle their body heat to escape cold weather.

They don't scare easily
by: R. King

It has been my experience that wrens don't scare too easily---as they have flown off when I appear several times around our nest at our home.
