My Baby European Goldfinch

(miracle to have survived)

(miracle to have survived)

About 4 months ago my husband who is a gardener came home with a tiny baby bird. He had cut down a tree that had a nest with 4 baby birds in it but did not see them until it was to late.

Three were dead but the smallest one was still alive.

I did not know any thing about birds at all. The baby bird had no feathers and its eyes had barely opened. I had no idea how to take care of it.

I went to the internet and read about hand feeding birds. I got some dry dog food and watered it down, put 2 drops of bird vitamins in it and fed it to him with a syringe, he loved it.

I made a nest out of tissue and put a hot water bottle under it. I thought that he would die, but every morning I got up he was still alive so for the next 2 months I fed(baby bird)as I named him every half an hour.

He grew to a fledgling and started eating by his self and I found out by looking at photos of baby birds that he is a European Goldfinch.

He is changing every day as he`s not yet an adult. He love's to sing, he copies my whistle in the morning for me to let him out.

I have a big bird cage with every thing that a bird would want. I let him out every day to fly around and have a bath.

I think he is a very happy little bird. I know that I can never let him go in the wild he just would not survive and I love him to much.

You'd be surprised - yes he would survive.
You have to wait till he is old enough to eat on his own. If he came from your area he will survive because everything this species of bird needs is available and their intuitive instinct guides them to the plant and seed.

European goldfinches have a pretty complicated
diet requirement. Plain bird seed or canary seed would not do. They have a high and special dietary requirement and need lots and lots of greens, they love thistle seed, other seeds of course, dandelions, chickweed and the sort. Release him at a time of year when you see other finches like him, or the time of year you found him.
Best of luck, would love to know how he does.

Please email me if you have a answer! By the way, I loved your little bird he is so cute, how old is he or her?

How kind of you to persevere through all those feedings. And how rewarding! He probably thinks you are his mommy, so I would think he will do fine as a house bird.

Thanks for sharing.

What a wonderful story! And how sweet of you to take the time and energy to "mother" this little one! Thinking it was the "humane" thing to do, many people would have just let it die. (Translation: "I don't want to deal with it.") Hats off to you!
