My Babies

by A
(FL)

My stepdad is a maintence man at a large condo home structure. He had called my mom and told her about these two baby Mourning Doves. They were in the parking garage under a car. He didn't see any sign of the parents, so he brought them home.

I was their adopted mom. My mom and I went to the pet store to get the baby food for them. I had to feed them every 4 hours. I was so happy to see that they survived the first night!

I had to take them to work with me because no one would have been home to feed them. One was smaller than the other and it looked like it was still growing feathers. They both were drinking water and eating well.

Well, that night the little one didn't seem like it was doing too well. The next morning, it died. I was so sad! I cried on and off all day. My stepdad took it to work and buried it in the flower garden.

The bigger one is doing really well. I think that one is a female. She loves going outside, walking in the grass and enjoys the sun. Soon enough, she will fly off and start her own family. She is drinking well, eating bird seed all on her own.

I feel like a proud mama and hope the best for her.

An update
by: Anonymous

Just to give an update....I had put her outside the other day. She heard another dove flying around and she started chirping like crazy! Well, I put her on the grass and she walked right to where the dove landed.

They stared at each other for a little bit, then the adult female dove started to feed her! I had gotten goosebumps! The adult started protecting her right away too. Other birds started flying to them and she shooed them away. I couldn't believe what I was seeing.

Every day I put her outside. She still can't fly but I don't want her to forget how to do the things she is supposed to do.
