Mourning Doves Nesting on my Window Sill

by John Luebchow
(Goose Creek, SC)

A few years ago, I noticed 2 mourning doves trying to build a nest on my brick bedroom window sill.

The female would stand on the slanted sill and wait for the male to bring her a piece of pine straw.

She would stand on the pine straw to keep it from falling and the male would bring her another. Whenever she lifted her foot, the original piece would fall to the ground.

After 2 days, they only had 2 pieces of pine straw on the sill. I finally stepped in and mounted a plastic pan on the sill.

Within a few hours, the female was resting proudly in their new nest.

That was 3 years ago and the doves are still using that pan 4-5 times a year. Last weekend, they notified me the pan had fallen to the ground, so I re-attached it and mother dove is sitting pretty again.

Doves & Bluebirds
by: Anonymous

Good story! Birds are so interesting to watch and observe the many unusual things they do....like our female bluebird staying on our window screen every day for a week now. We're still wondering what she'll do.....build a nest in the birdhouse nearby or what? We've had no ansswers on why she continues to hang on the window screen so much! Doves seem to visit a lot around our house, too....but never a nest on our brick window sill! Nancy
