Mourning Doves Nesting in Lg Bush in Backyard

by MOTEK510
(NEW YORK)

Hello everyone!!

What a wonderful surprise for me. I'm disabled and am confined to my home - have been for the past year and a half. I have come to love watching the beautiful birds of Long Island in my large yard.

I did not fully appreciate watching these wonderful beings until I lost my dog, a black Labrador named Zacherle, last October 16th. He was my buddy and I miss him so much, I still cry for him daily.

Then I began watching the birds that come to my yard. I knew that some birds nested in the large bush on the left side of my patio, but didn't really think anything of it.

Then, two days ago I began to see a beautiful Mourning Dove with a circle of white on his tail coming in and out of the bush, and each time with a small twig in his beak.

I had never seen such a labor intensive bird and I was enthralled watching him from about 9:00 am to 3:00 am, non-stop, every few seconds going in and out of this bush. I became fatigued watching him!!

This morning I very quietly circled the large bush and to my ultimate surprise I saw the female nesting inside the nest.

This has made me so happy, that I am now going to the store to get some sunflower seeds and cracked corn (I've done my research!!) Thank you all for reading!!

Mourning Dove beauty
by: Joyce

Hello there, Long Island - from across the country to Riverside, California.
Mourning Doves are said to populate (most) all the states....looks like this is definitely true.
My condolences on the loss of your companion dog.
How great that you are enjoying the beautiful doves; it is good that they bring so much enjoyment into your life.

There is an "abundance" of Mourning Doves where I live in Riverside; I love to watch them; 'have a low ground feeder for them in backyard.

Presently I also have a pair of nesting doves in my patio cover. I watch them from the kitchen and dining room windows. Unfortunately one little egg was lost, but Mom and Dad are faithful parents. I pray that the other egg will hatch and produce a healthy "fly-away" dove.
Blessings.

From coast to coast

Dear New York:
These birds are so lovely. They double-duty the nesting - so keep watching. There is a changing of the guard between 7-8am and 6-7pm in the evening. I have my second pair on the same nest from last year (except I put up a wired shoe rack devise so the babies did not fall again!) Last year, I lost one but I also saved one. I can't go through that trauma again. So sad about your buddy, but enjoy your time w/ these fabulous birds - nature feels your "mourning". Sorry, but I couldn't help it!
