Mourning Dove in my Candle

by Jayson

Meet Shelia/Steve

Meet Shelia/Steve

Hello,
My Name is Jayson and I am 8 years old and I have discovered I have a Morning Dove sitting in my moms candle on my back porch.

I have been calling her "Shelia" for about two weeks now only to find out by reading the above article that shelia is only shelia at night, and now have decided to call "it" Steve during the day.

I never knew that my day time bird was playing tricks on me and thought it was the same one this entire time, I was actually starting to worry that she/he was going to starve to death cause he/she never moved...

Glad Shelia/Steve has found a happy home to nest her eggs and we can experience this miracle with her/him.

Its a very neat thing to see right before my eyes and am glad i can share my story with you.

Jayson

Jayson, How Cool!! This is such a neat opportunity for you. You've always been so interested in animals. In Kindergarten you wanted to be a vet in Africa for wild animals. (You would be a great vet)!
You taught me something new, too. I didn't know that the mom and dad switched places. Hope you enjoy watching them and tell me all about it on Monday. Ms. Amanda
P.S. Thank mom for sending the article, I appreciate it.

How awesome for you!!! This is great! You are so lucky to have this happen right on your own porch. Keep a close eye on them and you might even get to see them practice their flying soon!

Hi Jay!

You have been talking about this bird for a while now and it's so cool to finally see exactly what you're meaning when you tell the class about it! It looks like it's very up close and personal. Thanks so much for sharing this with us. :)

Jayson,
Although I haven't met you, I'm very proud of your curiosity of the simplest things in life-nature. It is a great gift that you get to witness such a beautiful wonder of life. And very funny that the doves chose a candle to make a nest in! Pretty clever of them, isn't it.
I look forward to updates on this new family of yours.
Sincerely,
Your mom's friend, Heidi

Jayson how very nice for you to have found a new friend. I have plenty of confidence that you will be a great parent to this new life! Have fun and take lots of pictures this opportunity does'nt come along for everyone or very often. I wonder is your mommy helping you with a journal to remember how "it" grows and what time it eats/sleeps? and dance? Its a gorgeous day out hope your out playing!!! love Kimmy

The surprise candle nest
by: Alice

Jayson - I, too, was afraid that it was the Mama bird always on the nest - how could this possibly be?? Then when I read, on this site, that the birds switched out at night, I got smarter, and could then tell the difference from the Mama and the Papa bird. I found that each would sit on the nest in a different way.

I sure do miss watching the birds in the nest. The little ones have flown off, and the nest has been empty for several days now. BUT - since someone on the site said that the birds return to nest in the same place, I am hoping they will be back next year!
