Just Noticed New Dove Tenants

by Nancy Ware
(Walnut Creek, CA)

My husband and I have been renting a condominium for a bit over a year in Walnut Creek California, and we had heard the doves coo for many days a couple weeks back, and then actually commented when we didn't hear them for awhile.

Keep Your Doves Around All Winter With A Heated Ground Bath

We were just starting to go out on our patio to barbecue when I first saw the sentry. He was standing at full alert on the patio cover overhead and I wondered why he didn't fly off.

As I look around, I saw "her". She was sitting in the nest in the small tree that graces our small patio and neither she nor he made a move.
We decided to barbecue our steaks in the oven so we wouldn't bother them.

It's been 4 days now and "she" has not left the nest that I can tell. Every time I peek out through the glass sliding doors, there she is, sometimes facing us and sometimes facing in the opposite direction.

Haven't seen her gallant sentry later, but I have a feeling he is near.
Who feeds "her" during this time?

We will keep you posted...Will try and get pictures, but don't want to scare them off.
By the way, we own a sometimes noisy Conure "Tike" who watches from his cage inside...

Dove parents
by: Anonymous

The parents take turns sitting on the eggs. While one goes off to eat the other sits.

Just wondering...
by: Nancy

Does anyone know where the other parent dove takes off to while the remaining parent takes care of the nest? Do they stay nearby somewhere in case he or she needs something? I never see the other one nearby once a switch has been made, and I haven't had the pleasure of seeing the switch yet either.
I love reading all the stories and comments concerning the doves....Thanks....nancy

Just watching them is such a blessing....

Our Dove Tenants (although now we only see one at a time) are still consistently sitting on the next. I have to tell you, the nest appears to be so precariously built...almost looks like part of it is hanging over the wood it's on top of, however with so much untrimmed tree draping over it I think it is well camouflaged. I just fear it will fall with the little bit of wind we've been getting lately, or worse, wonder if the young ones once they hatch, won't fall.
We don't ever see any cats or even squirrels in our patio so I think they are safe from that danger and predators, although I know there are some in the trees in the main walking areas of the condominium plan. Although, he/or she (whichever one is on the nest at the time) watch us carefully when we venture out to spread bird seed on top of our outside large birdcage for them (the cage belongs to Tiki, our star Conure Green Cheek that owns us)they never fly off in fright. We have chosen to discontinue barbecuing in the area so we don't disturb our dove tenants. It's been approximately a week now and we are excited about getting to see the wee ones. We can't see the eggs since one of the parents is always there...any ideas how large they are and what they look like? Do they generally have only 2 at a time?
Okay, we'll keep you all posted....we did take a picture of the one on the nest yesterday and as soon as possible (when I can get my husband to post it since I don't know how...) we'll add to the saga.

Doves

I'm on my second set of eggs this season in the lamp on my patio. Truly these guys have internal clocks. At exactly 6:45 PM each evening, they make the switch and the eggs are not left alone for a second. I usually miss the morning switch because it happens before I wake up. It was a joy to watch the last set, I even got to actually see the babies leave the nest after two weeks. Then they were gone for a month and now they are back. I would truly be interested to know if these are the same ones or a different set because they seem more scared of us than the last time. Also the last time they occasionally left the eggs alone before they were hatched. This time, not for a second.
