Hummingbirds Staying Longer

by molly
(nova scotia)

I live in Nova Scotia, Canada. I had 16 hummers here this year. The latest I have had them was Sept. 5th.

Last week on the 6th I still had 4. It is now Sept. 12th and I still have 2 here.

Six days longer than any previous year. As much as I would love for them to stay I am getting worried why they are still here.

Does anyone else find their hummingbirds staying longer this year?

staying longer

We live in Hemet, Ca. so we are used to hummingbirds staying year round, though not as many. I was really surprised that right before Christmas I noticed a hummingbird adding to a nest on our patio. I thought maybe she was just using it at night as the nights had been in the 30's. Yesterday when she was not around, I looked in the nest and saw two eggs. I've never known any bird to nest this early.

I live right at the mouth of Halifax Harbour and mine are usually gone by Aug.20th or so. This year(2009) I had more than I have ever had, they ate double the normal amount and today is Sept.2nd and out of 8, 2 are still here. It was a wonderful 4 months but its coming to an end....
