5 baby birds need to be identified

by Donna
(Florida)

Hello, I had a small birdhouse in my backyard that had been there for years, after a storm we experienced the three nights ago, the birdhouse fell and broke.

We had picked up the birdhouse and put it in a box to put in the dump, but thankful had not done so yet.

I walked by the box yesterday and heard chirping, when I looked down there were 5 little birds there, 2 of which were out of the birdhouse, 3 were still inside.

I immediately made a makeshift nest for them, but as of yet the parents have not returned to them. I am not quite certain what type they are or how old they may be.

However, I do have pics of them, so please, if anyone can help me to identify them so that I will be able to give them the proper diet.

I have fed them some mulberries mixed with black oil sunflower seeds that I liquefied and fed with a dropper.

Need Help Identifying This Bird

by J.P.
(Illinois )

I found this cute bird on my back porch step. It sat there for 20 minutes and let me open my patio door and take pictures without flying away. The colors on this bird are amazing. This is the first time I have seen a bird like this. Your help to identify it would be very much appreciated.

Two young birds? What are they?

by Linda Fortner
(Sandy Utah USA)

I see you looking at me.

I see you looking at me.

I see you looking at me. The flowers smell yummy Humm is that his togue? Shhh I'm Hiding

This year I have two young birds about the size of young robins that I can not identify.

First I thought they were juvenile starlings,
which I have lots of. The beaks are long and they have a white throat. The are light brownish and gray.

The strange thing is they do not eat from the bird feeder with the other birds. They like the suet block and also the seed block with nuts and sunflower seeds. They try and feed each other bugs which is very funny.

They love the fountains and birdbaths in my yard and take full use of them. I see them in the grass and flowers picking at bugs and what ever they can find. They tend to stay around the yard most of the day. They are not frightened of the other birds and will share the bath water with them.

I hope some one can identify them for me. I live in Sandy Utah and I love to watch the birds from my windows and patio.

I feed the birds all year which rewards me with many different types as the migrate from the valley to the mountains, or just passing through.

What kind of Bird is this?

by JP
(Orland Park, IL USA )

This bird was at my feeder and I have never seen one before. You will notice in the last photo he brought along his companion. Please let me know what it is. Thank You.

From Wild-Bird-Watching.com

It appears to be a female Rose-breasted Grosbeak. They have a rich Robin like song and both male and female sing. (Usually only male songbirds sing)

Nest in mature deciduous forest, arrives in late Spring and leaves early Autumn. Check online or your field guide for confirmation.

Hummingbirds Identification

by Pat
(Brenham, TX)

I posting these two pictures in a larger size.

My first posting the photo's are too small for anyone to see detail. Hopefully, these pictures will come across better.

These hummers are currently feeding at my house in Brenham, TX. I think one MAY be a Rufous Hummingbird, the one with the green on it's throat I'm not sure about.

I know that it is not a Ruby-throated, which is the most common hummer for our area.
Thanks, Pat

Robin or Thrush?

by Vicki
(Altoona, WI, USA)

Are these just juvenile Robins or some type of Thrush? We live in north-west WI, have a grassy yard surrounded by trees. These birds foraged around for 1/2 hour or so one morning last weekend. I don't think they looked/acted like juvenile's, but that may be.

Found in Chimney

My fiance' and I found these 2 little birds in our chimney when we moved into our house.

The birds have no wing bars that I can see. As best as I can tell, their bills are gray. They are relatively small, slightly larger than a parakeet.

They've been in our chimney since we moved into our house in April. We live in northwest Florida. The birds make a loud shrieking noise every time we open or close the fireplace doors.

Mystery White & Grey hawk or Falcon

by Paula Cary
(Weed, CA)

I came up to our detached garage and heard loud chirping. Looking up, I saw a large white and grey hawk or falcon clutching something on top of a electrical pole.

He was waiting for his kill, which was another bird, possibly a quail, to die. I could see the dying bird still trying to fight off the larger hawk, to no avail. Once the bird died, the hawk started eating it.

I had to leave, so I didn't see the bird fly off or what happened to the carcass of the dead bird, I didn't see it laying on the ground so I think the Hawk flew off with it.

We have never seen this type of bird before. Usually the hawks are here are Red Tail Hawks. We also have seen Owls and occasionally Golden Eagles nearby.

The mystery hawk or falcon had a white body with grey wings and a grey and white head. I am not sure how large it was, it was the size of a Red Tail Hawk or maybe slightly bigger.

We live a in rural area with a small stream nearby and a neighbor has a large pond on his property. We live in Northern California, about 1 hour south of the Oregon border.

Can anybody tell me what type of bird this is? Thank you for your help.

South Carolina/North Carolina border - seabird ?

by sandra
(st marys, ontario, canada)

Picture was taken from a Casino cruise boat on the Atlantic Ocean, just off the coast on the way back in to Little River, South Carolina. We were not yet back in to the intercoastal waterway.

This is a very nice close up of it in flight when zoomed in & cropped.

Cannot identify it from my very large bird book. Can find other birds with long, thick, dark beaks, and dark feet, but the flight pattern has a point at the back end instead of square tail , and the mottled top of the wings is what I am having difficulty finding any pictures of.

A lot of the flight patterns of birds are from below, not from the top, and most have wing bars of some type, but not the mottled look. The coloring is also brownish versus gray or black, including the head itself, with white or lighter coloured neck/nape/chest area. This looks to be a good sized bird.

As I like to take pictures of birds when I am away from my home area and then try to identify them, I would appreciate any help I could get on identifying this lovely sea bird.

Thank you.

Saffron Finch?

Saffron Finch?

Saffron Finch?

My wife and I moved to northern coastal Peru (South America) about 10 months ago.

As in other countries where we have lived we have had trouble finding guides to birds. However, not being real bird watchers, we have just enjoyed them without knowing exactly what they were.

Here is a photo of what we believe is a saffron finch. There is a couple that like to eat rice and breadcrumbs right out our window, but this photo was taken while eating at a restaurant a few miles from here. Could someone verify it or correct if it is a saffron finch or not?

Unknown Bird in St. John's, Antiqua

(St. John's, Antigua)

We came across this bird perched on a step ladder on our back patio.

It didn't appear injured, it just looked like it wanted somewhere to rest and not be bothered. My son tried to shoo it away but it didn't leave.

It doesn't look familiar for our territory. Can anyone identify it please?

Mysterious Visitor to our backyard feeding ground in California Central Valley

by John
(Ripon, California, USA)

Photo1 on tree

Photo1 on tree

Photo1 on tree Photo2 on tree

We currently have 4 feeders in our backyard. Each feeder with different types of seed to increase the varieties of birds who visit on a daily basis. We currently have 12 different types of birds who visit.

We have been able to identify all of the visiting birds with relative ease with one single exception.

WE have looked online through various bird catalogs and have not been able to identify what we have named this bird as the mysterious visitor.

This visitor also has friends who look just the same.

This visitor only started to appear when we began feeding all of the other birds who visit. This bird has never been see eating from the feeders, it simply goes up and down the trees, head first straight down, or straight up the tree, and seems to find his food in the bark of the trees.

When this mysterious visitor goes up and down the trees one can hear his climbing action as his toes dig into the bark.

We have not heard any sounds from this visitor except his scrambles up and down the trees.

We are wondering if anybody can identify this bird.

We had considered him being a woodpecker / sapsucker although we have not been able to find his specific markings in any catalogs.

Need Help Identifying a Bird

by Brenda Scott
(Greenup, Illinois)

Need help identifying a bird.

While feeding and watching the birds we saw this bird and wasn't quite sure what it was.

It is a little larger than a Junco and has a black head, neck and wings with a white marking on the wings.

The underneath part of the chest is white but the sides are brown or rust colored.

We enjoy feeding the birds and see many different types such as, juncos, chickadees, cardinals, blue jays, woodpeckers, tufted titmouse, sparrows and an occasional bluebird.

But have never seen this type of bird before but thought it looked kind of like an oriole.

Help to identify Hummingbird

by Pat
(Brenham, TX)

bird # 1

bird # 1

bird # 1 bird # 2

I live in Brenham, Texas and have two different type of Hummingbirds visiting a feeder.

I am not sure what they are. From March - October the Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds are what we normally see. At times we would see one or two Buff-Bellied Hummingbirds.

I'm attaching two pictures of what I believe to be two different birds. I took both the pictures today, Dec. 7, 2010, at two different times.

I'd appreciate any help to identify what type of of Hummingbird they are.

Thanks, Pat

This Bird Built Nest in Garage-ID Please

I should have uploaded the other picture which is blurry but shows the tail, breast color and wing bands better.

I should have uploaded the other picture which is blurry but shows the tail, breast color and wing bands better.

I believe this bird first showed up in my garage at the beginning of April (not certain). I am located about 1/2 hour north of Los Angeles, CA.

My picture doesn't show its tail, which appears to be as long as the body. I would guess the length of the bird to be about 7-8" from the tip of the tail to the top of the head.

My garage has no windows and the side door is opened in the morning to let sunlight in and then closed at night. The bird built a nest on top of the garage door mechanism and has been faithfully trying to hatch 4 eggs (I checked recently when she was gone and held the eggs to a bright light and there was no sign of life in them).

I have a feeling the eggs aren't going to hatch because this poor bird probably was shooed away from the nest numerous times before we even knew she had a nest in there.

Just taking the car in and out of the garage would be stressful on her. I have more pictures of the nest and a blurry one of the bird showing tail if that helps. I also wonder if I should remove the apparently dead eggs so the bird can move on.

Help Identify This Bird

by Gizella Meyer
(Lancaster, South Carolina)

These two birds appeared first on a power line and then a tree adjacent to the dirt road in front of my home.

The colors were not that vibrant, mostly brown, tan, with a yellowish bill. From the size of the transformer near the bird I estimate size somewhere between 12 to 18 inches without the neck extended.

These birds have long necks even though it is difficult to visualize based upon my poor photography.

I managed to get one landing on the tree with his/her wings and neck extended. They were constantly preening themselves and each other.

I live in a rural area outside the city limits of Lancaster, South Carolina. Lots of woods, ponds, hills and a river nearby. Could these birds be adolescent Green Herons?

Hawk ID trouble

by Jaimie
(Bardstown, KY, USA)

I have seen this hawk several times near my feeders in the past two weeks. One afternoon around 2:30 he flew past me, within two feet.

I could hear the wind whizzing across his/her wings. A few days later it landed on the shepherds hook I hang my feeders from and sat there for a minute after I stepped out the door.

Yet another afternoon, he landed on another shepherds hook and looked in the window at me. I have managed to get pictures of him after he flies into a nearby tree but they are not real clear.

I am submitting one and I have some of his back as well. While looking out the window at him he appeared to be 16 inches from head to tip of tail.

I was so amazed it could have been bigger or smaller in reality. I just couldn't believe he was sitting there seemingly looking in the window at me.

It has a bit of yellow on the beak with black on the tip of it, I didn't catch the eye color but I am hoping he will come land close enough again so I can.

The back seems grey and when it is in the tree I can see little bits of white on his back. The chest is white with brown streaks. It has a long tail with bars.

I would like help identifying this hawk if possible. I am leaning toward a sharp shinned hawk except for the size. It seems a little bit too big.

So it could be a coopers hawk as well. My guide books don't have much info regarding juveniles. If other photos are needed I do have a few more. Thank you.

Also, should I worry that the hawk will attack me or my neighbors small children? If so, would a scarecrow deter this hawk from coming into my yard. It does seem to wait until I go into the house before it flies into the yard.

It is in my yard in a semi-rural setting. It is very near Bardstown, KY USA

I am far from being an 'expert' when it comes to birds. I do enjoy watching them. Recently a bird I am not familiar with has decided to take up residence in my newly build tool shed. Anyone know what this thing is? Its behavior makes me think it might be very young. (Bird seen in North Georgia.)

About the size of a dove and has a longer beak than most. Looks like his bill color is gray.

Help! I can't identify this bird!

(Lee's Summit, MO)

I live in the Kansas City, MO area and have a couple of bird feeders in my backyard.

I frequently have mourning dove, house finches, house sparrows, Carolina chickadees, cardinals, blue jays and common grackles.

But this one bird I can't identify. It is medium size, resembles a female cardinal but doesn't seem to have any feathers on its head.

It is mostly gray with orange throat, wing bars and tail. Could it be a sick female cardinal?

This hawk was in my front yard.

It was on the chase for a squirrel hiding in my flowers. Can anyone tell me what kind of hawk this is?

Also if you can tell me if it is a male or female? It was beautiful to watch. I did have to chase it away because I could not watch it attack the squirrel.

Thankfully it flew away and the squirrel ran up the tree to its nest.

Hawk or Falcon?

(Orange County, CA)

Hawk? Falcon?

Hawk? Falcon?

Didn't see it flying.

Was about 20 feet from me as I walked out of my door. He sat there as I went back in to get a camera and took a number of photos, and he would stare right at me when I got closer, but wouldn't fly away or move other than his head. I would post a front side photo but it was early morning and little light so this is the best picture I got. He was still sitting there when I went to work, no idea how long he hung around for....

Unknown Bird

I have been trying to identify the bird in the photo. It was in my back yard for a couple days but haven't been able to get any more photos.

It has a white neck with a yellow spotch on the head and two yellow splotches on the breast. It moves quickly from one place to another.

It is only about 4-5 inches.

I live in southwestern Wisconsin. The birdfeeders are on my back deck. Haven't seen the bird on the feeders, just feeding on the ground and on flower pots.

I did see it on the edge of my roof this morning.

I have a pair of wild birds building a nest in a bird house I have provided in my front yard. I watch them daily caring twigs and entering the house and returning over and over. I don't know what kind of birds they are.

They are greyish brown and are about the size of a mocking bird (not a mocking bird tho) and they have a crown (spiked hair) on top of their heads. Their breast is almost a yelowish whiteish color.

And I live in Jacksonville, Fl. Do you have any idea what these birds are????
