A week ago one came down and was in my face, now I think he was saying goodbye to me.

You can nearly guarantee your hummingbird will return to your feeding station next year. Hummingbirds have an uncanny ability to find food sources from previous years.

Be sure to get your feeders out in time for the spring migration. You just may get a nesting hummingbird next year.

But for sure, your hummingbird will attempt to get back.

Hummingbird Food and Migration
by: Gene - Administrator

You can continue feeding your hummingbirds as long as they are around. Removing feeders to encourage migration is a myth. Hummingbirds know when to migrate and your feeder will make no difference. There are other factors that cause them to migrate.

So keep your feeders out two weeks longer than the last time you saw hummingbirds feeding.

The young born this season are the last to migrate, they need to put on weight before they leave.

Just an FYI, use the contact form for questions. This is the place to comment on the story or add to the main story.

Hummers
by: Mr.Bill

When living in CO, there were times of the year to end filling hummingbird feeders (to encourage their migration). Now, in Northern CA near Lake Berryessa, we still have hummingbirds all over the place. Should we quit feeding them soon or continue throughout the year? Thanks.

Goodbye birds

Ron's comment about the hummingbird is similar to mine with the English swallows. I live in England and every year the swallows arrive. I know they are going to leave in the Autumn, but it's always a surprise when they go. I home my swallows will be back and wish them well on their airborne trip.

Returning Hummingbirds
by: Beth

Each year I place a hummingbird feeder on my bay window. If I'm a little late the birds will let me know.

I'll see them hovering around the window looking for the feeder. It's then that I hurry up and make some sugar water and hang my feeder.

I also get downy woodpeckers, orioles, and flickers coming to my feeder.

I just love watching and feeding the birds.
