Garage Nesting Morning Doves

by Paul D.
(Dunedin, FL. USA)

I have a pair of Morning Doves in my garage on top of my garage door opener. They seem to have a nest somewhere in my garage every year. An sometime I will have two nest at once.

I have been watching this nest since they started building this years nest. An the male an female come an go as they want too. They seem to know when I will open the garage for the morning. An know when I am going to close it for the night. I am not sure if they have a way in or out if the garage door is closed.

This morning when I went out to take my dog for his morning walk I noticed she was gone. An I looked up an saw the two hatch lings. I did not see them yesterday or the day before so must of hatched during the night.

So I will be watching them over the next couple weeks. If I am right as per the info on the page they should be leaving the nest somewhere between May 15th to 18th of the month. I hope I get to see them fly off an leave the nest. An who knows maybe we will have anther nest this year.

Nesting
by: Anonymous

We have mourning doves that have nested and laid two eggs on our garage door opener. We have tried to be careful but think one of them has been frightened off. Yesterday evening for the first time since setting up camp there was no one sitting on the nest and still not back today. Do you think they have now abandoned the eggs and nest?

Same Story
by: Roland

We are having the exact same experience with a couple doves in our garage. This morning they started building a nest right on top of the garage door opener. We chased them out a couple times as there are plenty of places around our house to nest and no natural predators in the area for them to hide from (we live in Lake Orion, MI).

I have one question, did they make a mess in the garage? They seem pretty determined and are now waiting outside the garage for us to reopen it. I'm wondering if I should just give in and let them use the space.

House eaves nesting mourning doves
by: Barbara

Our house has pillars made of brick that extend under the eaves, and every so often we see birds nesting on top of the pillars. Well, what a delight to see three of these pillars having mourning doves nesting there.

One mom already has hatched her two babies. They are so pretty and I love watching them, especially the one with the two babies.

Unfortunately, we have one cat that goes outdoors at night, and tries to get the doves that are closest to the back door. So far, I don't think he knows they are there and they are safe.

They coo all the time. I told my husband that I thought they were pigeons, but he said they were doves.

However, after looking at some bird websites, I now agree with him that they are doves. My husband also says they bring good luck.

I don't know if that is true or not, but they are pretty to watch anyhow.

love bird nests!
by: Denise

Isn't nature and spring time wonderful? I loved reading your story.

We are almost neighbors by the way, I am in the Ocala National Forest.

We have bluebirds, sandhill cranes, woodpeckers, and cardinals nesting in the area.
My husband and I love to watch the birds.

Left The Nest
by: Paul D

I was out in the garage this morning an both mama dove an little ones were in the nest.

Well I went out to run some errands. An I looked up check on my family of Morning Doves. An the nest was empty.

So they left the nest somewhere between 11:30AM EST an 1:00PM EST. I was hope to see them leave the nest but I missed them leaving the nest.

I will leave the nest alone for a few days an see if they may come back. An see if they lay more eggs.

It was great watching them build their nest an sit on eggs an hatch them off.

Update On Garage Nesting Morning Doves
by: Paul

The pair of Morning Doves nesting in my garage.

Her hatching lings are getting big an starting to do the cooing sounds. An she is going out more & more to get more food to feed them. They are getting big too. An they watching me a lot when i go in & out of the garage an they also know I am watching them too.

Both mama & babies are not afraid of me coming in & out of the garage with my lawn tractor. Where I park it is right under the garage door opener. I am really surprised I have not found an presents in the seat or on my tractor!!

I was wondering if anyone know if the same pair will come back the next year to set up a new nest or will the hatching ling come back to same place an set-up a nest of their own an lay eggs? So if anyone know please tell me.

Well I will post another update in a couple more days on how my family is grow!!
