Found Dove In Hanging Plant

by Bobbi Kaye
(Lafayette, LA USA)

I don't know who was more startled, me or the dove. I went to water my plants one day and watered the dove, who flew away quite upset with me.

I left for work and when I came back she was still there, that's when I knew we were going to have a little pair!

It was fascinating to watch how faithful the parents were and I was amazed at how quickly the babies grew and flew away!

Within a week of seeing their little heads, they were HUGE and flying away. I know they're close by in the trees around our house, I see them and hear them.

But the really amazing thing is that this morning when I left for work, there she was again!

Thanks for this website, because I came to get answers on why she was there again! I didn't realize they could have more than one brood in a season!

It's all quite fascinating and precious!

have the doves left their babies?
by: Mia

Doves have a nest in a hanging basket on my porch. I have been watching them and babies are doing well. However, when I came home to check on them tonight, just the babies are there. It has been about 2 hours. I sure hope the parents come back. Just worried because they have not left the nest before, other than to look for food in my backyard. Does anyone know if they usually do this?

We have them in our baskets too!
by: Chris

For three seasons now we've had doves in our hanging baskets outside the kitchen window, and they've returned again this year. I'm a bit nervous because my baskets are smaller than usual but hopefully the babies are safe and not too close to the edge once they start to move around!

The first year, I called a bird sanctuary for advice and was told that I should try to keep watering because it keeps the birds hidden. They suggested we water during the heat of the day in case she(he) leaves the nest for a bit and the eggs won't cool too much. Sometimes the doves just stare at me while I mist their basket. Other times they leave, but have always returned within 30 minutes and we've always had successful hatchings.

Dove nesting
by: Kristen

I have a similar situation, this evening I was watering my hanging baskets and found a nest. My question is how were you able to water you plants without scaring the the birds? Please email me at Kristen003@hotmail.com if you have any suggestions.
