DovesOn French Quarter Balcony

by Deb Hicks
(New Orleans, LA)

She just laid her first egg this morning and I certainly hope that this story ends happily. Since the storm we do not have as many birds in New Orleans.

It looked as though four doves played at 'falling in love' every afternoon in my courtyard. Then last week I put out the bell shaped bird feeder.

This weekend, we saw a dove with the proverbial olive branch in her mouth (sweet olive in this case) and I noticed the very small nest in my flower box containing a medium sized rosemary bush.

We wanted her to know that she was nesting near people, and she didn't seem to mind at all. A resident with a cat moved back, so that may be the reason for moving from wherever they had their babies before.

I showed the nest to my neighbor, who was just in awe of what a good omen this seemed.

So, I'll leave the bird bell where it is, and hope for the very best for her and her little family. But here is a photo of her, March 18 6pm.

Three Baby Doves
by: Deb Hicks

After the two hatched mama and daddy continued their round the clock attention to the babies for about a week and a half. One morning I noticed the mama gone and another baby in the next, slightly bigger, but still a baby. My neighbor said he saw a bird fluttering around near the nest and thought it was one of the original babies. Another baby must have dropped down from the rooftop, trying to fly and ended up in the nest on my balcony. The mama and daddy seemed kind of confused and were not attending to the nest as attentively as usual, and the next morning all three had flown away safely.

Anybody who shares this experience knows how special we all feel.

Babies!!!
by: Deb Hicks

We have been trying to avoid making eye contact with the mama or daddy, afraid to scare them off. Although I do go out and try to gently speak to them from time to time.

The day for the babies finally came and I had to wait a half hour or so to see the tiny bundle of fur poking his head up from below. We had noticed the mama and daddy sitting up higher in the nest and the timing told us that the babies hatched.

Second Egg.
by: Deb Hicks

Her second egg came this afternoon - March 19th. I'm hopeful that since they are all inside the flower pot that they will be protected from accidents and cats. I wonder if she feels self conscious that we spend time looking at her, but she seems content to just sit. We thought we could get her a tiny book to read (lol) or play music for her. I know she's just a bird, but......

Dove/olive branch
by: Anonymous

The photo did not come through, but I loved the post. I hope the dove does well! Lucky you - dove with olive branch and all - I am envious.
