Doves Wooden Cat Planter

by Karen
(San Diego, CA)

I have had three sets of nesting doves so far this season. The first brood was successful in my wooden cat planter.(Ironic)

The little ones matured and flew away. Within days another two eggs were in the same nest! However, within 3 days, one egg disappeared with no sign of nest disturbance or broken shells.

Then, the second egg disappeared! Three days later, two doves (probably a different pair?) set up their nest in our outdoor ficus by our den window.

Two eggs, birds are nesting and then today - no adult on the nest and one egg missing! Very frustrating.

Any advice? What could have happened to the eggs? There are no cats around, and I think we would have heard other birds skirmishing.

Baby Dove Nesting on 3 Eggs!
by: Anonymous

So far this season we have had 10-12 dove eggs in two main nests in our backyard. However, what is going on now is very unusual. We have a baby bird (2-3 weeks old and big enough to fly) who is nesting on 3 white eggs. I'm not sure, but I think one is left over from his incubation period and it did not hatch. The other two are from either his parents or a completely new pair. I have not seen this youngster fly, and within the last 24 hours the adults have not returned. What is going on? Can anyone help? I do not know how the little one is getting food, and I don't know if any of the eggs will hatch.
