Doves on patio table

by Nancy DeAnda
(League City, Texas USA)

I noticed one day a few twigs and pine needles on the patio table, this table was at a corner and under the eves of the house.

The next day a few more but didn't look much like a nest. On the third day 2 eggs!! But the eggs didn't lay on any part of nest..I was worried they would roll right off the table.

I went and got some paper from my shredder. I pulled a large leaf off a tree and only handled the eggs with that leaf in hand and made a better nest.

Well, within a few minutes the dove was back and seemed happy on the results. I had also put a lean to.. a lawn chair with a towel on it to shield her from and rain.

Well, I am still waiting, soon will be 2 weeks!

P.S. Another pair of Doves tried to make a nest on the car mirror...had to take that off. But they then made it my oak tree.

Question/Concern
by: Anonymous

A mourning dove laid 2 eggs in her nest right by our house door in a planter attached to the wall...the babies (2) have finally hatched BUT the parents are nowhere to be seen! Its been half a day and its night time now but still no parent has returned. Its quite cold outside and I don't know what to do...do mourning doves usually leave the first day they are hatched and come back later??
