Doves on our patio

by Doris

It was about 2 weeks ago when my brother-in-law went to get the spreader to fertilize the grass.

He reached up on the cabinet and when he grabbed the spreader the bird got scared and flew away.

He noticed the nest and saw 2 or 3 eggs inside. He decided to put the spreader back and not use it at that time.

He told my husband and he then showed us where the bird was. It didn't seem scared of us at all. I have been watching since then.

Today I checked on the birds and now they don't lay down but stand up a lot and I could see one of the babies peeking out from under it's parent.

We have a couple of sparrows nest on our patio but the doves are truly something to see. The best part of it all is that they are so low and allow us to come close to them and show no fear.

I have been looking into there diet I'm going to try and feed them now. I can't wait to see what happens.

Hi Apple Valley. Julie in Hesperia here. Our baby doves that made their nest right outside our front door just flew away this past Fri. It was so exciting to see them grow. They really grow fast.

Personally I would not put bird see out. I tried that last year and every bird known to man came. The crows will eat the eggs and babies. The other ones might scare mom and dad.

After the babies left...my husband saw the parents making another nest but this time it was on the ground in dry grass in an empty lot next to us but close to our house.

We have a lot of cactus wren nests in our front yard and they alerted us to what the doves were doing.

I hated to do it but I messed up their nest before they could lay because there were at least 4 or 5 crows in our pine trees watching and waiting right above them.

Good luck with your new family.
