Doves On light Outside Door

by Susan Gismondi
(Stratford, CT)

Two Doves began making a nest over a month ago on my light outside my front door.

I went away for 5 days and when I returned found no one sitting on the nest. I got a step ladder and looked into the nest and found 2 nice eggs.

No bird was sitting for maybe 3-4 days and some of these nights were pretty chilly. Then suddenly a bird was sitting and has been there day and night for the last 3 weeks.

Will the Doves know when to leave if the eggs are not going to hatch? And what happens to the eggs if they don't hatch and the birds leave?

And will they return to this nest? Thanks for any info.

Turns out there were two young ones. Yesterday we paid them many visits. Today the nest is empty. Hope they make it safely.

We, too, have a dove nest located on top of an outdoor house light fixture. It is protected by an awning so the nest has survived some wet and windy weather. Eggs must have hatched last week but only today did I see a little bird peeking out under an adult bird.

thanks for the comment.....it did happen. One of the eggs hatched but unfortunately, a raven/black bird raided the nest and took it away. I did see the other egg hanging off the side of the nest and it finally fell and broke, only yellow liquid inside. I was so upset, but I know the doves will be back in a month or so.
