Doves on front porch

by Jennifer
(Ft Walton Beach, FL)

My mother in law passed away in March of 2008. When we got back from the funeral, we walked out the front door one day and noticed a mourning dove had built a nest up in the corner of the porch.

We took this as a symbol my mother in law was ok, and was keeping an eye on all of us.

Pretty soon, the two babies appeared and we watched with delight as they attempted to "fly" from one corner of the porch to another! Eventually, they left the nest.

It wasn't until weeks later we knocked the nest down.

Now here we come to March 2009, and suddenly another nest has been built in the same location!! I found this very interesting and spent some time reading about them online.

I read a bunch of things that said they don't typically rebuild a nest in the same place.....but here was another dove to watch over us!! As we all know, those babies hatched and eventually left the nest.

I had not bothered to knock the nest down, considering it's not a nuisance. Then I come home two days ago, and there she is! Back again!

I honestly take this as a symbol that my mother in law is watching out for us! Especially now that my husband is deployed overseas.

People may call me crazy, but I talk to the bird every time I walk in or out my door. I think it is very, very neat!

I enjoy the sights such as this one that give information and also allow people to share stories! Thank you!

Me too!
by: Lisa from FL

Recently, I noticed I also have a mourning dove nest, with two little eggs in it, on my front porch. The mother dove sits constantly on the nest, sometimes the father dove is there too.

My grandmother recently passed away and I miss her very much. Also, my son, who is in the Air Force, will be deploying to Afghanistan. I take these doves as a sign that all will be okay, and that I am being watched over the same way the doves watch over the eggs.

I also talk to the doves each morning, and they sit and watch me! Maybe I am also crazy but they do give me some peace.

Not Crazy!
by: Rose Marie

You're not crazy speaking to the Dove. I speak to ours every time I see her/him. I call her "Mrs. Lady". She is so very precious. Our hanging basket was redone sometime late Saturday afternoon an by Monday morning the two were sitting there as if they had just moved in.

By Wednesday, there were two eggs! Now there is a 'sitter' almost all the time. I feel as if I'm going to be a 'Nana' again.

mourning dove
by: BevJEAn

I read with great interest the story of the 'mourning' dove nesting and hatching on numerous porches.

My sons daddy died very unexpectedly this past Feb09 at age 48. No question we are all devastated. Since Feb I have sat on my back porch mourning him several times. On May 5 I noticed a nest with 1 egg in it. I was astonished and watched the momma come and nest it. I can't help think and hope that there is a connection to this wonderful event, and our terrible loss.

I just posted a similar story about my bluebirds and my father .........and yes, it is very heartwarming to me, and I know how you feel.
We have to take these little signs, and enjoy them.

That's a beautiful story Jennifer.
How wonderful to have the doves there and how they make you feel. It is such a precious sight.
I to talk to the birds! I think as long as you don't encroach on their space.. they will except you, and probably enjoy you as much as you enjoy them!
I enjoyed your story.
