Doves in Tombstone Rose Bush

by Brenda
(Prescott Valley, AZ)

A pair of doves have built a nest on a ledge of my pergola where there are two Tombstone rose bushes growing.

The nest is very sparse and I check around it every day to see if one of the two eggs have fallen in one of the potted plants nearby. I can open my bathroom window and peak inside, but learned early on that this disturbs them and the dove flies off. So, will leave that window closed for the next few weeks.

What I was wondering is, it seems like they leave the nest for several hours during the day. I don't know if they are looking for food or what is going on. I really worry that my other animals in the yard and the noise I make going in and out of the sliding door will cause them to abandon the nest.

Since it is the first nest of its kind in my yard, I am really hoping that doesn't happen. I also have a hummingbird nest in a tree out front, and several house finch nests in my Italian cypresses. Too fun!!

Tombstone Roses and Doves
by: Brenda

Well, the doves abandoned the nest. There has been no activity for two days. So, I got out the ladder this a.m. and removed the eggs. The doves are nearby as I have heard them cooing, and I saw one on the wires above my house. My hope is that they return to the nest and see that it is empty and try again. I have made it more stable by adjusting the branches of the tombstone rose bush. I also noticed that the pretty yellow flowers are starting to bloom. So, will keep my fingers crossed to see if my efforts were worthwhile. Hopefully there will be both pretty flowers and babies to view.

doves staying away from nest
by: Julie

I read that the male is on the nest daytime and the female....nighttime.( or visa versa ) but they take shifts. In my porch nest it is never empty from one of them. Last year in my pine tree.....it would be empty from both of them at least 20 to 30 min. at a time.

That is when I found the eggs on the ground. This nest is right outside my front door and they never fly away. Maybe the opening of the window scares them.

I put my humming bird feeder about 50 feet away and I have all my pine trees (huge) all around the front yard away from my front porch. Can the doves see you before you open the window? Mine see me and I am thinking that they recognize me and I am harmless.

He or she flew away one time while I was out there. I had a hand spade in my hand working in the planter under their nest for about 10 minutes, then I dropped the spade on the concrete and the sudden noise made it fly off.

I went inside the house and it came right back. Good luck to you. Julie
