Mourning Doves in the Sunshine

Mourning Doves in the Sunshine

I noticed a single mourning dove walking around in the flower beds in our back yard recently and decided to keep watch to see if it would come back.

There has been a neighbor's cat visiting our back yard and I was concerned about the cat hurting the juncos, house finches and the mourning dove so I was also watching for the cat and would chase it away when it came in our yard.

One time I saw it sitting on the deck under the Anna's hummingbird feeder - looking for a 'fast food' meal. I scared that cat away!

Today I noticed a pair of mourning doves sitting in the flower bed below the Weigela bush. It was fun to watch them fluff out their feathers to keep themselves warm in the cool wind while soaking up the sunshine.

It looked like they were napping. I took several photos and, in some their eyes were even closed.

I hope that our back yard provides a safe spot for the mourning doves and that they will nest in the big trees that surround our back yard. It would be interesting to have them as neighbors in our yard.

Dove's in Begonia
by: Jeannie Rowe

My backyard has been a home for several pairs of Dove's. My husband has a flower basket that had a begonia and for some reason they keep going back to it all the time to lay their eggs and raise their baby's. It is fun to watch them.

The doves seem secure and content in the picture and I hope they do nest there. I love the sound of mourning doves, especially early in the morning of a sunny day!

Just looking at this photo makes me feel the sun too. It is a warm and slow moving feeling. I know these doves will be very safe and happy in your yard. I hope they come back.
