Doves in Planter--Story #3641

by Kimi
(Altadena, CA)

I sense a trend... We too have doves in our planter, which is about 5.5 feet off ground, on a little platform under an overhang.

The first time we went out there after she'd laid the eggs, we startled her (and vice versa), and she flew off the nest.

That's when we saw two white eggs in it and realized it was no longer just a pot with a dead plant in it. We had the same questions your website says other people worry about--does she ever eat?!

Nice to know the male & female have been taking turns nesting. And here I was so convinced it was the female I saw on the nest in the daytime--when it was actually the male.

Glad to read the info on the website about when we may expect the happy event. We try to keep our voices down when we pass near his/her nest, and now I try not to go out there at night.

But she picked a spot right near where we lock up our bikes, study, and do our laundry.

Fortunately, she seems to be getting used to us.

Did they peep?
by: Kimi

Congratulations, Deb! Did the chicks peep or make little squawking noises after they hatched?

Do baby doves make noise?
by: Kimi

Can anyone please tell me whether we can expect the baby doves to make noise soon after they hatch, like other birds? I posted the above story and the next day, realized that 15 days had elapsed since we first spotted the dove and her eggs. Since then, one or the other of the doves have been sitting on the eggs without interruption. So I wonder why the eggs haven't hatched yet. Or have they hatched, and the parents take turns sitting on the hatchlings--and the baby birds make no noise?

We try not to stare too long at the dove, for fear s/he might take this as an aggressive act. So I haven't actually gotten up close to the nest. I try to glance at it & the dove very briefly, from about 6 feet away, and I leave ASAP.

I searched through other posts on the forum, but find no mention of what sounds baby doves make.

If anyone can please enlighten me, I'd appreciate it!

Doves in Planter.
by: Deb Hicks

Mine flew away once when I tried to get close to take her picture during the day. The shutter or the flash, or something scared her. She came right back. The babies hatched yesterday. We saw a very, very small bundle of fur poking his head up under her feathered breast.

It seems like an auspicious occasion.
