Doves in Hanging Plant

My baby dove

My baby dove

I noticed a mourning dove in my hanging planter a while back but did not pay any attention to it - just thought it was finding something to eat. The basket hangs from the eave of my sunroom and is fairly well shaded. Well I now know it was building a nest in the basket.

Yesterday morning I was out there and the dove was sitting in the planter again and to my astonishment, there were two baby dove. Mama sat for quite a while but left and was gone a long time - I checked later at night and she still wasn't back, leaving those poor babies on their own. I was afraid maybe I had scared her off. However, this morning she was back and has been there most of the morning.

Does anyone know how old they are before they try to fly - they are only about 6 inches long right now but they do have feathers, eyes open and seem to be moving around.

Mama sometimes sits on top of them. She had one wing held out over them and I guess she was protecting them from the sun. Sometimes she perches on the side of the basket and I assume she is feeding them then.

This is the first time I have had nesting dove and so know very little about them and would appreciate any information anyone can give me. I hope they come back every year. This has been an incredible experience.

I hope I get to see them fly away. I have posted pictures of the two babies - aren't they precious.

Hanging planter NEST
by: Mary Paul

While attempting to water my hanging geranium in late evening, I scared off the mama Dove only to find 2 precious eggs in the nest. Thank God she returned and has been faithfully attending her eggs.

The nest hangs not more than 6 feet off the deck, and mama doesn't seem the least bit concerned that I go past her 2-3 times a day. We pretend to ignore each other, but I know we're both paying close attention!

I knew nothing about their nesting habits and this site has been invaluable in enlightening me. Can't wait to DISCREETLY observe the babies.

They Flew Away
by: Bonnie

Just wanted to update - this morning both babies were still there but I knew they would be flying soon. I went out a little bit later and one of them was gone. I kept an eye out the rest of the morning for the second one. Mom and Dad kept hovering nearby. The baby walked around a little bit and then stepped out on the rim of the basket - finally, he just took off and landed in the tree a little ways away. It was such a thrill to watch that baby fly away. I wish there was a way to know which ones were mine. I sure hope to go out there and find mama in the nest again soon. I feel like an empty nester now.

Baby Doves
by: Elaine

My Ms. Dove on Main St. in Downtown Franklin, TN. is on her second brood. Her first brood flew from the nest in about 2 weeks after they hatched and now as of this morning she has hatched one of her second brood. I am very anxious to see if there will be another one later today or tomorrow. They are such a joy to watch.

Previous indeed. I am on round 2 and had one family last year. I thoroughly enjoy it. A gift of nature we should all cherish in these times!
