Doves In Grapevine Wreath

by Sharon
(Paxton MA)

On our main door to come into the house I have a large grapevine wreath with flowers around it.

I walked by it 2 days ago and a mourning dove flew out of somewhere, but I wasn't sure where.

Yesterday I noticed that in the bottom of the grapevine there was a nest, which looked a lot like the wreath material. It was very loosely done.

We watched it all day and then we saw the mourning dove nesting in the bottom of the grapevine.

As we were working around the yard I would go back and take a look. Late in the afternoon I saw an egg. Only 1.

I put up a sign on our walkway "Mourning Dove Nesting Do Not Enter please go around Back".

Also in the morning the sun hits that area of the house really bad, so this morning, because our door is black I went and put up a white sheet on the door so that the sun isn't as warm.

She seems comfortable, but I am still concerned about how hot it does get there in the morning. Also, another writer wrote that they always lay 2 eggs, but our bird only has 1.
