Dove Nesting On Light Fixture

by Betty Claypool
(Kingman, Arizona)

I have a Mourning Dove nesting in my hanging light fixture on my back porch. She has been nesting for a couple of weeks and her babies are ready to hatch.

She flew and landed within 8 feet of me and I talked to her. I told her we would not hurt her babies and that we would provide food and water for her and her babies.

I got the food and water and walked within 2 feet of her coming and going where I place it on a small table near her nest. She did not move.

I have not taken any photos yet but need to do so. It is a beautiful sight to behold.

Dove Nestin on Light Fixture
by: Betty

My doves left the nest today, three generations of them. On Father's Day I had five dove in the nest at the same time. My camera wasn't charged and when it was, one dove had flown. There were four sizes of them, the original mother, her daughter, and her grandbaby and two smaller young.

I am anxious to see if they will try a fourth hatching in a few days. I will keep you posted if they do and this time I will get a photo.

Dove Nesting on Light Fixtture
by: Betty

We had our second nesting of our doves, the first two hatched and stayed in my rose bushes for four days and gradually became more aerodynamic but still stayed close.

The Mom then began her second nesting. I did not see the second set of hatchlings leave the nest but now I think we have her young daughter raising her own hatch.

I do not know how soon the young begin to lay or hatch their own eggs but the Mom on the nest seems much smaller than the original Mother. I am lost here. But, we are bird friendly and they can stay as long and hatch as many babies as they choose.

Birds nesting in my hanging light fixture....
by: Anonymous

I heard unusual sounds coming from my porch Monday morning. The little baby doves were leaving the nest. This week they have stayed in my garden/rose bushes and their parents are near by. It was cool to see the little birds trying to grow into adults with their parents nearby.

I showed my guests (people) the mother dove with her little one and the father dove nearby with the other little one.

Today I went on to the back porch and the mother dove is laying another egg in the old nest. I will have two sets of babies back to back. My daughter said, they will probably hang around your place Mom. I think they will. I am happy.

My Hanging light fixture doves
by: Betty

I just witnessed a rare occurance in nature. Both the female and the male were on the nest at the same time. They exchanged places. The female dove flew off and not for a short distance but a long ways as if she knew where she needed to go. I did not have my camera ready but it is charging right now. My printer is down so I could not post them, or so I think.

The male is so attentive, he is acting as if he is feeding the young doves. I believe they have hatched as today when I was on the back porch with my three little dogs she flew off, she acted as if she was cripled and wanted us to follow her.

I will do my best to take photos. Doggone the electronics. I wish I could make them all work so I could share what I am seeing with all of you. What a wonderful sight. Betty
