Dove in a Shrub

by Debbie
(Charlotte, NC)

Every year the Mourning Doves nest in the shrub next to our front door. In spite of the "People" traffic they hang tight and bring forth new babes over and over. We have had hours and hours of pleasure watching nature so close.

Many questions have been clarified for us by this site. Things like how can the Dove survive without ever leaving to feed. Who knew they were changing shifts when we were not looking. Also we never could understand how the babies would live if no one brought food to the nest.

Last year during one session of "raising babes" we had a fun experience. Watching the morning news with coffee we heard a strange clicking sound at the front glass door.

At first we thought we were hearing things but it kept on. Finally I got up to see what the clicking was only to see one of the baby doves pecking at the glass door.

We don't know if it saw its reflection or had just decided we were ok folks and maybe he would come in for a while.

No matter what they are thinking or doing the doves raising by the door have been loads of fun for us and all our friends who come. They all know if you come to Debbie's and the doves are nesting you have to pay proper respect, be quite, come in quickly and most of all DO NOT DISTURB
THE DOVES!
